  1. It was called the Anvil Inn. The Queens Head was over the other side of the road until it was bulldozed to make way for the roundabout. Sometime after that, the Anvil became the Queens Head..that`s maybe when building changed too? I haven`t a clue about THE Guidepost...i`ll see what i can dig up though.
  2. I`m puzzled as to why this place is needed, as the job centre has the use of free phones and all the newest jobs are on the touch-screen computers? Also, that `Help Hub` is only open twice a week (or 3 days a week, as both times are given in the article) An i missing something here?
  3. I`ve found a mention of Storey`s Buildings here http://www.sixtownships.org.uk/choppington-stories.html But, it doesn`t really explain where Storey`s buildings actually were. If they were where the Queens pub used to be, i have a photo which is from 1900. The pub on the left is the Anvil Inn. I`m not sure if the building on the right is the Queens (before it moved to where the Anvil is). It`s quite possible that those buildings on the right are Storey`s Buildings? Another photo from 1912
  4. Each individual can make their own mind up whether they like a post or not, so if someone receives a neg off another member, it doesn`t mean a different member would perceive the original poster as a one to avoid (so to speak) Basically, negs have no meaning to anyone other than the person that gave the neg (other than the person who received it) So that makes the neg system pointless in my eyes. It doesn`t show anything what-so-ever, only that someone is huffing on and negging folk. Infact, i`m beginning to think about the rep system altogether. What exactly is the point of it? It`s beginning to sound like a scoring system of some kind. Everyone should be equal on here, regardless of their views. This is a forum for the people of Bedlington and beyond, a gathering place where we can all get together and share our views, have a bit banter etc, not a place to `oust` the un-populars
  5. It still boils down to `why do we need to neg anyone?`. The rep system as it was seemed fair. If someone took the time to write a post then they got a rep. If their post didn`t deserve a rep (for whatever reason) then they didn`t get one. It saves any bad feeling kicking off.
  6. I don`t understand why it`s been re-introduced anyway, the forum survived without it. Now, since it has been introduced, it`s started a `neg` war This is where all the bother starts now i suppose.
  7. This is a bit clearer than the first photo, the year given is 1930, so you weren`t far off.
  8. Double Row would have been here somewhere, you can see the colliery houses to the left of the photo. Best i could find at the moment, but i`m still searching
  9. You mentioning St Cuthberts Church got me looking up some history. Firstly, i noticed on a map in a previous thread, that there was an oval shape attatched to the church so i set about looking to see what this was and the reasons for it..I came across these photos which were taken in 1873 The reasons given... `St Cuthbert's church is shown with the extraordinary plan that was created out of the old church in 1818. The old north wall was pulled down and replaced with a large semi-circular extension, complete with galleries. This had the effect of re- orientating the worship space to north-south, completely contrary to the time- honoured east-west of most Christian churches throughout the world. The reason given for this strange expansion was the growth in working population at the booming Bedlington iron and engine works but the real growth of the town did not come until the second quarter of the nineteenth century (in 1801, there were 789 people in the town, but by 1821 it had more than doubled to 1,862). This unusual arrangement at the church lasted nearly 100 years as it was not until 1912 that the extension was demolished and the original orientation restored` This is the way it looks now.. So, what i`m wondering is.. it seems a lot of work and expense on this building, solely for `growth of population in Bedlington`? Did everyone in those days go to church religiously every week, then once the work died down and people up and left, the building was pulled down? Curious??
  10. I`m assuming from your post that you were a little angel then..considering all the `good howkings` you`ve had
  11. I got 70% first go and 100% 2nd go Just like Fourgee
  12. I`ve been trying to find some photo`s of the school but these are the only images i could find. The information given with the painting read `The school was a wooden structure with seven classrooms. The painting shows Jo Daison ringing the bell and Bedlington Brickworks in the background. The next image is a class photo taken in the 1930`s. The Headmaster Ben Berkley (front row, first right) and Jim Wood, teacher of class 3 (middle row, 3rd from right)
  13. Looks like Doctor Terrace to me too. This is a photo from 1988 when the house`s were being demolished. The back of Dr Terrace is to the right and North Terrace to the left.
  14. The maps and more can be found here http://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/Bedlington_C14.htm (oakeyboy had put the link on already but it didn`t work for some reason)
  15. I was reading this blog not long ago which mentions Kidds Yard at the top of Glebe Bank `We lived in Kidds yard at the top of Glebe bank. The entrance was through an arch`..The author of the blog also mentions Catholic Row etc Some on here might find it interesting..he has some good stories to tell.
  16. Could this be the building that you mention? This is the Old Hall. It looks like what you`re describing.
  17. Can i have a one for coming 4th?
  18. If you`re saying that Wilson`s Yard was the workhouse, then in answer to your question `Yes, there is a difference between Bedlington Old Hall and the workhouse`...they`re in two different places. If you look at the top map, you will see the Council Offices (Old Hall), then Wilson`s Yard. The `Institute` on the top map is where the Community Centre is now.
