  1. Part of Bedlington for so long. Cars petrol and more. Last remaining Garage. When it closes will the last person switch out the lights.. I am not saying it is going to close. I hope it does not
  2. Listening to Northumbrian Voices reminds me that our dialect is not so very different from up country. Guess the rise of the coal industry and before that the Iron Works shaped our way of speaking. Pitmatic may have started of as a term of abuse but it is now seen as important. It is just the way we speak.
  3. Local lad, Amble, Johney Dickenson has been ill and a collection of artists have compiled a cd to download. It is not expensive, only a fiver. John Renbourn has even been involved Look him up on the Internet. Very interesting
  4. I was going to say no more, but being 'gobby', here goes. My opinion Parking up on the Blagdon Road in the car park past the Snowy Owl Pub! You then walk through a woody glade. When the full impact of the Lady is visible, you cannot fail to be impressed. If you are flying into Newcastle you will see it. Anyone hiring a hot air balloon please invite a certain person from the site. Once again my opinion, in 1998 I was considered an oddity for saying I liked the Angel. An early life here taught me to value everyone's opinion, whilst keeping my own. Debating society Westridge.
  5. Anyone remember the folk club in Ashington. I like the Unthanks too. They are good to see live.
  6. There is even mention of a Barty Potts and three goals scored in the Northumberland Minor Cup. Kathryn was asked to write a piece of music for the occasion. Try to get this particular cd it is so much more than the music.
  7. Another female Kathryn Tickell did a series of shows last year. The double cd is relevant to us in Bedlington because of the Language used. The tales are spell binding. You do not need a hot air balloon or to be scared of ghosts.
  8. I would like to pay tribute to a local lady who made a difference in so many ways. She lived in Bedlington and was involved in local history groups and the Northumberland County Council. The record office at Meldon Park even named the local history search room after her.
  9. Brilliant. At least get out walking. Good health to all Wealth to the company. (Banks Group) Happiness they got rid of the clay. Only time will tell, how it is viewed in ten years time.
  10. What did you think of the Angel of the North and what do you think of it now? Burial Mounds, history and a talking point. What more can art do, but inspire controversy. The open cast, the form of a lady, a viewing platform for all the area, bringing tourists to the area, I love the whole thing controversy included It is a good thing to have democracy where we can disagree
  11. Back to the topic. Not that Bond movies are not important. The house was amazing to go around. Still would be if we had access. The grounds, the garden going down to the river would all have made a great National Trust property experience. Once again unique Bedlington.
  12. Whatever it was originally for, it is an asset to the town. Our history makes Bedlington unique. The St Cuthbert connection and a market cross being erected could be a talking point this year as The Lindisfarne Gospels return to Durham for a period of time. It is my opinion the Gospels should be permanently at Durham, that was where St Cuthbert's body was taken for safe keeping. The British Library is not an impressive building when compared to Durham Cathedral. Bedlington is part of that history, and unique. We were part of the Durham Diocese for a considerable time.
  13. There was a local rhyme Hartley Pans for Sailers Bedlington for nailers Think that was how it went!
  14. Yep I have a couple but have not managed to copy and attach.
  15. Oh Dear I have every respect for all miners, particularly if they were at Hartford Hall. You did not say the miners or your brother were scared Keith. I said they would not be scared. I am sorry you have misunderstood. Miners did have lots of superstitions, but given the job, which needed skill and bravery, that was very understandable. Please accept my apology.
  16. It reminds me of the old Cup and Ring marks The circle of life. Joni Mitchell wrote a good song. Views are magic. We can view it from lots of places in Bedlington. How much money are they making from coal extraction. Walk up and see what you think. Apologies to anyone who lives far away
  17. What about standing on top to get the full benefit of the steam.Pollution was not seen as a problem. Train journeys to Blyth and Whitley Bay. The Hotspur, I think and the Fat Ox!
  18. Where is the site? Maybe start a new one. Anyone remember the wires to the caretakers house being cut? Circa 1960 I was hit by a hockey stick. Several stitches later I never did like competitive sports. A prize list I have tells a tale. Ghostly voices from the past
  19. One of my replies has disappeared. Maybe the Ghost! When the hall was the Miners Rehabilitation Centre. I think the upper floor was the one that came under suspicion of being haunted. Ruffty tufty miners would not have been scared of the dead surely
  20. I have a number of books on Bedlington. I am a bit of a hoarder.
  21. Sounds interesting I have a book on Plessey and more, must do some work (research)! My mother worked at Hartford Hall and a cousin worked in the Gym (repair) It is a wonderful house in a fantastic position. Also the tales of Ken Russell and the filming of Women in Love. Ken Russell did a follow up on his filming. The Main Street had Maureen Shelly's butchers shop looking distressed and boarded up!
  22. Lots of opinions but how about reading The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist by Robert Tressell Maybe we all live in a kind of Mugsville
  23. An old relative now deceased, said the gates at Hartford were shiny when she first used to see them! Never been able to confirm. Pity they are no longer there or anywhere in the town.
