  1. Just when I decided to opt out, some ghostly voice from the past calls me back. Inherited genes, supernatural, who knows. The day started with negativity, then a post that woke up my memory of the past, then finally Clannad and Brian Kennedy. My mother died shortly after seeing Clannad in 1996, and Brian Kennedy has always it seems been a favourite in the family. Tomorrow at the Sage beg borrow or steal to get a ticket! Only joking, worth going out of your way to see, live music beats u tube anyway for me!
  2. My Gran had a parrot they taught to swear. Not sure what they did when the vicar come to tea. I was brought up to accept that humour was essential in life. Not to take offence.
  3. Wow Sarah was my grans sister. Very interesting Thank you.
  4. In my life in Bedlington, humour was used as a way of diffusing arguments. I wonder if that is still the case. Gallows humour.
  5. I have offered to resign from the site. Sorry once again for any offence, none intended.
  6. Sorry Keith it was meant to be light and humorous! Yesterday was International Women's Day and there were a lot of people in Morpeth paying tribute to her. She fought for freedom to speak your mind. Some people would enjoy reading the Daily Mail, and applaud their stand on life. I have a different opinion to you, and should have left you with the last word. However in raising the profile of Bedlington, maybe this dialogue will motivate people to have opinions, disagree and still stay friends or fellow residents.
  7. Warning Please The Keiths If you go to Morpeth in the next few months, do not under any circumstances express these opinions. Today at Saint Mary's there may have been trouble. Luckily you are in Bedlington.
  8. These days are children may not see the need to vote! Democracy may not be good for all, but it is said to be the best of the alternatives. I cannot imagine a time when we did not have the privilege to vote. This is a topic that I think demands discussion. We now feel the politicians can be corrupt. The local council used to be referred to as Ali Baba and the forty thieves. Vote for Malcolm Robinson MP for Bedlington
  9. Years of force feeding and other indignities may have persuaded her to take action. The miners strike and police brutality may or may not come someway to explain. We all have points at which we become militant. Check out this website, many people feel strongly about lots of things from litter to politics. If we went back to a time when only an elitist few had the vote we might understand her sincerely held views. Either way it is good to discuss.
  10. The grand kids together with me are listening and singing along to Bellowhead. Lillibulero track eleven on the Broadside cd. The parents are searching for headphones and will listen to anything else.
  11. Check out all that is going on today for International Women's Day. There are many other talks and activities before June's Anniversary of Emily's death Morpeth is going to decorate the town in the colours of the suffragettes. A Lawless Lass.
  12. I have a book on a pit pony that was called Earl of Bedlington.
  13. Just eaten chips walking home. Scraps, bits, did we call them ' scramsuns' Living in exile for part of my life has it's disadvantages
  14. Symptoms you are a rascal. Round the rugged rock the rugged rascal ran! To be said with the Northumbrian 'R' of course. I think you must be related to the mischievous Lord Lampton who caught the worm.
  15. We need to remember our past when we think the youth of today misbehave. Maybe character building. Or simply life's rich pattern. The circle game!
  16. In my time at The Netherton Colliery School, two lads lost their father in an accident. Anyone know more, it was about 1953/4 My memory is about the community pulling together to help the family. Truly inspirational, in every sense. In life you try to make a difference. You help and do not ask for reward. The reward is to lead a useful life.
  17. Somewhere I have a book on the Bedlington Coop. My great uncle has his picture in it. The coop movement was hugely important in providing the essentials of life. Your story about George Marley is very good. An example of what we should all be doing about our own lives. There is a sense of community when the connections with your family go back so far.
  18. Exactly right, our kids talk about their history. My lot lived in Ridge Terrace for a few years, I am still apologising to the neighbours, they loved it and talk about all the people and places. My history includes stories about them, which go down very well with the grandchildren, but not with my own kids. When the grand kids are born I buy the days papers for them. History starts there and then, whether they like it or not. At the last Bedlington history session someone felt schools should do more on history. I think it is up to us too. Sting in a song said History Teaches us nothing, I think it does although I do think we repeat mistakes.
  19. Well done John. It is very important to keep the language active. The play The Pitman Painters has played in lots of places including Broadway. An after show talk I heard, asked the question of the language being understood.. The cast said in Wales not many people laughed at the jokes and after the performance they asked why. One member of the audience said they could not laugh loudly because they feared missing the next joke
  20. There are World Heritage Sites with less to offer. Bedlington has it all, with a history going back to the Dark Ages. In between two rivers, The Blyth and the Wansbeck, not to mention the Sleekburn, we have higher ground to survey the land for invaders. Who can prove we are not named after Bede, the Cuthbert history was not just escape from the Normans. Any look at the church reveals windows that are Romanesque. Obviously there is the Norman Arch and the lepers window, but any look at the stone work reveals far more. The Market Cross, Vulcan place, the Nailers all add to a history that is of huge significance. Morpeth has a folk tale about trying to bring the tide to their town, without success. In Bedlington we did not need to try. The sea ways were the roads, Cambois which sounds French has a history that goes back to a time long ago. Obviously history demands argument, but I think Time Team or others could well investigate. I have to admit to being prejudiced.
  21. Pitmatic is not out of fashion. Books are now written on the subject and I believe it is a lasting legacy of true Northumbrian dialect. When people moved to the jobs in the mines they brought with them the language. Variations do occur but they are worthy of study. Sadly Bedlington is becoming a dormitory town. This means our language dies or changes. The content of this site is of huge importance. HPW you are a legend in your own lifetime, write all you can and know it is worthy and important. I wish my memory was as good as yours! Micky can you not write some of what your Dad's story.
