That’s great .Eggy. It seems the stone masons for Bedlington came from the Oliver family Maybe morbid but I find gravestones very interesting .. This is an interesting one from the General Cemetery in Sheffield

The walk this weekend is Cresswell Towers .

We need to track down this copy of the Northumbrian. It has an article on Bedlington and the churchyard.

So very many gravestones and so much history . I will try to find others that I feel are of interest

Great research Canny Lass. Local knowledge seems to indicate there were three Miss Smails . Grandmother , mother and granddaughter at the shop near Hollymount . The Smail’s shop in Morpeth sold similar products to farmers and locals. I feel they must be related . Working on gardens and on large estates may have led the family of the Smails to opportunities to sell supplies to an emerging market . Moving off the land to an industrial society may have been a factor. More products available plus the rise of allotments. So many people kept live stock .( Pigs Hens ). We could learn something from the past here . No transporting of products huge distances. Hardware shops in Scotland are still a viable business model . In England big business has taken over with a need for a car to get you to say B and Q .

I guess our time is running out as well .You can’t turn back the Hands of Time .

Other graves to ponder Before they disappear as unsafe. So very sad to see them destroyed by pollution and the council .( Health and safety issues )

Maybe the lady ,we knew as Miss Smail , was the daughter. I think the original piece of music she played was Wagner The Ride of the Valkyrie .

It seems mermaids are unusual on gravestones .

Thanks Eggy I have attempted to contact Eileen on Facebook You are doing a great job The walk today was excellent . So many details about our town . The names on graves have relevance to people we know today or know from the past . One memory was Miss Smail organist at Saint Cuthbert’s. She died in the 60’s but had an original taste in music .

One day I will shock you and do the quiz .

Eileen could send me a personal message and I could collect or she can drop it off at mine .

Eggy I will ask but I am not on the committee and David and Dorothy Cowan will not be there on Saturday until possibly later . i would say bring it along and I will give it to the committee members . In these days of Covid and global warming it is good to have something positive to think about . Our lives in Bedlington have been amazing . So many many happy memories past and present . The magazine is testament to our lives and those of our ancestors.

Bedlington History Society and the plan for 2021/22 Starts of with a get together and walk on Saturday 25th at 1:30 These are the details :- I just hope they load correctly .

September History Walk 25th at 1:30 . Everyone to meet at the War Memorial I was going to post about this walk nearer the time. David Cowan is very knowledgeable about all things Bedlington . It should be an interesting walk . In the Shire we have so much history spanning the centuries . Sometimes the experts do not agree which keeps my interest . Last night a programme on Sir Walter Scott on BBC4 made reference to Border Tales . We are lucky to live in this area . So much inspiration for everyone . Maybe I am biased ..
