  1. We have a Subway, I remember going there, once... Also sorry to go off topic but your not alone Keith, it is the same here in Canada and I think Brian will tell you it's the same down under, the minority has taken over! If some of the important issues were put to a plebiscite we all know how it would go!(I'm sure when we become the minority things will change!)
  2. Have a great Brian, I hope you and your family continue to enjoy your new home!
  3. My next door neighbour is a trapper, he runs a trap line and makes a living at it, across the road there is a native family who hunt for all their meat. Most! (well half) my friends hunt for most of their meat, (hunting for non-natives is only allowed for a few weeks in the fall, controlled by the sale of hunting tags) a moose can fill a big freezer, elk is nice, deer are tasty, a couple of friends go up to the Yukon for trophy animals (usually sheep) to put on the wall, too each his own! it takes all sorts!
  4. HOW TO CALL THE POLICE WHEN YOU'RE OLD AND DON'T MOVE FAST ANYMORE. George Phillips an elderly man from Bedlington, was going up to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things. He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?" He said "No," but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me. Then the police dispatcher said "All patrols are busy. You should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available." George said, "Okay." He hung up the phone and counted to 30. Then he phoned the police again. "Hello,I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I just shot and killed them both, the dogs are eating them right now." and he hung up. Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic, and an Ambulance showed up at the Phillips' residence, and caught the burglars red-handed. One of the Policemen said to George , "I thought you said that you'd shot them!" George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"
  5. Shopping locally has its pro's and cons! we shop locally whenever we can afford too! (we tend to get gouged as they don't have any competition!) my wife remembers Pop and his sister Edie Clouson very well, Edie also ran a small shop. You can't beat the independent local butcher and baker etc for quality but it usually comes at a high cost as they don't have the volume purchasing abilities that the big companies have.
  6. 6 weeks! you've got it beaten, keep yourself occupied, good luck!
  7. No chance of me buying them, but my wife would!
  8. My wife agrees Mikypotts, that was Beadle's paper shop, (that was where I bought my last packet of tabs! February 14th 1971!)
  9. Sort of good news, bad news! at least you have a couple of weeks to try and sort out the transportation dilemma, what is public transportation like now? car pooling? Good luck! Keep us posted.
  10. Sorry for steeling this thread Tez! bediesathome, Lock Hall was where Millfield Court is now, between the Black Bull and Dun Cow, the dance was upstairs from the COOP.
  11. Happy Birthday! 74 Front Street East, Bedlington

  14. I don't think The Isle of Man had repeat offenders! http://www.corpun.com/imjur1.htm
  15. "one-stop shop for everything from the 60s, 70s and 80s", "I have always been very wary of nostalgia, regarding it as an evil similar and related to the onset of senility" (Tony Ryan) I agree with you, nostalgias not like it were when I was a lad,we had proper nostalgia then!
  16. I remember traveling from Bedlington to the power station in the snow, (about 40 years ago) in my BMW (Isetta bubble car!) the roads were rutted and frozen, where does the middle wheel go! the throttle cables ran under the car and froze solid, to make it worse the railway gates closed at the station, I had to use the ignition key as a throttle! (snowing here still, and it's coming your way )
  17. -26c and over 1' of snow already! and it's coming your way!!

  21. It was a family event making proggy and clippie mats, hessian was stretched on two wooden runners and clippings were either poked up or down through the hessian, clippie mats were made with short clippinges and were pushed down and the ends trimmed, (like a shag carpet) proggy mats were longer clippings pushed up through the hessian forming loops and often following a pattern drawn on the hessian. As kids it was our job to cut the strips of cloth and keep the supply of cups of tea going! Aunts and cousins used to bring there gossip and news, even share their sweet coupons! They had a mat making demo at Beamish last time I was there. The same family members used to attend Beatle and Whist drives! even show up for wallpapering sessions or wall stippling! I think this may be the reason we never complained about "I got nothing to do!" mom would soon find something!
