Dementia Friends

Is Bedlington a dementia friendly community?

Recently I attended a 'Dementia Friends' information session at Cramlington. I would recommend the sessions to anyone who has any concerns regarding their relatives or friends. ( Further details can be found at https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk/ )

Five things you should know about dementia:

1. Dementia is not a natural part of ageing

2. It is caused by diseases of the brain. The most common being Alzheimer's

3. It's not just about losing your memory - it can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday tasks

4. It is possible to live well with dementia

5. There is more to a person than the dementia

With support, people with dementia can and do take an active role in life.

A Dementia Friends session was held at Bedlington Community Centre earlier today and there was a poor turnout as far as the residents, businesses and service providers of Bedlington were concerned.

The event was hosted by MP Ian Lavery and Helen Williams of the Alzheimer's Society and I am sure all those in attendance will now have a better understanding of how they can help those living with dementia.

Over 2.5 million people have become Dementia Friends. You could be one too!

I have a family history that stems from a community of Bedlington Miners who have always supported the Labour Party. I am however , not a fan of our MP Ian Lavery. I also do not know a miner who supports him. I do respect him if he has registered as a Dementia Friend and if it was not a publicity stunt then I applaud him.
