A Question For Threegee, Or Others!

Recommended Posts

I have a question, I tried to send it to threegee by PM but it wouldn't let me! Someone logged into a website a few times this week (nothing dodgy, not my usual dwarf porn fetish) and it appeared to be me, with my IP address, according to the admin there. It wasn't, as I was not even online at the time. Is it possible to make that happen?

Answers on a postcard please!

You don't have an "IP address" as such!  It's allocated from a pool depending on your ISP.  How long it's allocated for depends on a lot of factors, but it can be from minutes to weeks.  (I'm not talking about special ISP arrangements here).

So... it follows that a website admin can't make such a statement; the only entity who knows precisely who was using any individual IP at all times is your ISP.  Obviously websites can map IPs to user-names in particular timeslots, but they can't prove a negative (who has the same IP when you are not logged in to them).

However... you need to be confident in the security of your WiFi.  Make sure you are not using WEP for a start.  Wired Equivalent Privacy isn't what it is stated to be!  And, of course, make sure you use a secure pass-phrase for your WiFi.  One that can't be guessed, or inferred, or is similar to any other passwords you use.  If you've given it away to anyone in the past then change it (and the SSID too).

Dunno why you can't PM me.  Does anyone else have a problem here?  Feel free to do a test.

Thank you threegee, I thought something along those lines but am not too well versed in this sort of thing. Incidentally, I think the message said you couldn't take 'any more' messages; is your in box full? Are you that popular?

Ah, thanks for the heads up merc.  That "Trust" guy had used up my full quota. ;)

Little Ayda Faith Murphy was born prematurely on March 31, weighing just 4lbs, at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Rushed for her first operation straight after birth and another at just four days old, she's battling terrifying odds after being diagnosed with a series of incredibly rare birth defects.
An almost unique variant of gastroschisis, a defect of the abdominal wall, has left her intestines pushing up into her chest - a condition doctors estimate is suffered by no more than 10 babies worldwide.
Meanwhile, her heart appears to have flipped over and lies on the wrong side of her chest, while she's receiving oxygen from a machine due to her underdeveloped lungs.
