Bedlington Parish Magazine - 1952

Recommended Posts

I have just scanned these pages from a magazine that Eileen brought me. Fascinating adverts for local Bedlington shops in 1952. Cheers Eileen for sharing them with the community. I hope you all enjoy.

History Hollow - Old Bedlington Shops - this answers a few questions raised in that topic. Good one.

Brilliant stuff ... but were there no editorials, comments, letters, articles - or was it all adverts?

There are, Symptoms, but they are mainly church orientated and not local, either - ie, mission work in other countries, photographs of churches in other towns, etc, so I didn't think anyone would be interested.

Everything that you could possibly need - and more- right here in Bedlington Stn, ,,,,,,,,, but where are the take aways ? I think I can spot a potential money maker there, would anyone like a take away food shop? ..... Good reading a few memories stirred up there especially Jennings, Can anyone remember Jennings market garden behind the Bank Top, where the playing field is now ? Some of us still refer to it as Jennings field

I can't remember Jennings market garden, Keith, but I do remember Doyle's Shop at Riverview, around the corner from the Bank Top - bottom of Wood Side. It's a house now. In fact the bus stop there is still known as Doyle's Shop by the locals.

Ah yes Joe Stobbs shop, and the shop at the end of the row from the station club was that Ginnys? i know her husband was called Ned, i remember his name because whan just a wee girl i thought it was a horses name and would chuckle to myself, they sold great lucky dips. Another memory that sticks with me is the dash to Gelson Bakers at Easter to buy hot cross buns

Dig deep, you will remember Jennings market garden , loads of long greenhouses, ran by a rather butch woman , cant remember name at the moment .

Popped in to see my mate, Brian Buskin, today and he said his mother used to work at Jennings Market Garden. My bro vaguely remembers it but, alas, I can't.

@lilbill15 - did you join the History Society and do you think they would be interested in the full Parish Magazine from 1952?
