Holocaust Memorial Day

Symptoms

Recommended Posts

Just a reminder that Holocaust Memorial Day is on the 27th January ... of course, most decent folk will be aware of this and may wish to Google for more information. One thing to do is a visit to the Anne Frank Exhibition (showing free at Gosforth Library 27 January 2012 – 02 February). I saw this some years ago in London and it's well worth a visit.

First They Came - Pastor Martin Niemoller

First they came for the Communists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me

And there was no one left

To speak out for me

This notice is not meant to flush-out the odd racists who dwell in the dark corners of the Forum.

I might just make an effort and go to see this. I know of one or two people who have seen the exhibition down south and have found it absolutely fascinating. One of the things that someone told me was the realisation that when he was looking around, that it was really not that very long ago, and of course for some people, it is still in living memory.

I'm just resurrecting this thread from 2012 to remind folks that today is Holocaust Memorial Day 2016.  The top boss at the HDM Trust came out with the following quote today: "Genocide begins with discrimination and standing by allows hatred to take hold".

There's complete symmetry between what's happening now in Europe and what went on 70+ years ago.  Just look at the latest wheeze with the Danes confiscating valuables from asylum seekers ... sounds just like the Nazis stealing Jewish valuables to pay for their 'board and lodgings'.

Oh, and here's Steve Bell's cartoon from my beloved Guardian today:

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/picture/2016/jan/26/steve-bell-on-denmark-seizing-refugees-assets-cartoon

I tried, and failed to directly insert the image here ... "upload failed", even though the image is a .jpg and can be uploaded/pasted in other places (nowt wrong with the image).  So folks, you'll have to click on the above link.

Remembering what happened is of huge importance.

We all need to make sure this type of 'horror' never happens again .

'No man is an Island' humanity is respecting other people regardless of race or creed

Sadly sometimes 'Satan' comes as a man of peace.

Symp, I've been trying for the last two hours to upload a .jpg to my last posting without success................over to the GGGGGssss

I will check this forum permissions shortly Foxy, but no one has complained before and I don't think they have been touched for years.

BTW I've raised a few (unrelated) issues about the display of images in the gallery with Andy, and I'm told that fixes are already on the way.

Hmmm... I can't see a problem. :(

I saved that to my W10 desktop first, and then clicked on ", or choose files..."  It could be The Guardian is protecting their graphics from direct linking?

Can't be the Guardian putting the cuffs on the image.  I saved the image from their website to a folder on my desktop without any problem and can use the image in other applications ... I tested this.  I did a second test using the 'snip' utility in Windows and saved the result also as a .jpg ... again this worked in other applications but not via the Bedder's upload or cut/paste.

Which method are you using? Are you dragging the file onto the attachment bar where it says "drag files here to attach", clicking "choose files" and selecting it on your computer or using insert other media and selecting insert image from url?

Also which browser?

Preventing hotlinking (Inline linking) is relatively easy and fairly common, preventing determined copying is near impossible. I suspect this is probably a "user problem" or a browser problem.  More information needed.

Holocaust Memorial Day this year falls on Thursday this week (27th January).  The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust has a theme of "One Day" ... check their page at: https://www.hmd.org.uk/what-is-holocaust-memorial-day/this-years-theme/

Perhaps, with what might kick-off in Eastern Europe soon with a Russian/Ukraine/Nato conflict maybe we're in for another bout of mass murder of non-combatants.

We have to hope that history teaches us not to repeat the mistakes of the past .

Harry Patch the last ‘Tommy’ said War is licensed murder’

The programmes / books about the Holocaust are grim to say the very least .
I do not understand how people can be so evil .

Dangerous times for us all .

'Raison d’être'

SYMPTOMS!

Being tenacious about the meaningful, not so distant past, deserves some recognition.

Therefor ‘Symptoms’ I salute you.

Your statement, By Symptoms, of January 19, 2012 in Chat Central deserves much more attention than that, what it has received to date.

I won’t count, or pit one comment against another for the post, the same for those commenting on ‘not being able to upload a photo’. I don’t know how to do that myself.

Nichts desto trotz. . .

Your most recent posting deserves a more comprehensive debate with Forensic Scope, certainly not like some of the diversionist, pathological ‘Smoke-Screening’ speeches that some (MP’s) are delivering, in Parliament today.

Surprise, surprise the Rt Hon Bob Stewart MP (Beckenham, Conservative) gave an explicit recollection of his abhorrent experiences from territories of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Yugoslavia.

He failed, forgot, or ignored to include or mention that in 1878 prior to being fully annexed in 1908 into the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the territories had been, were part of the Ottoman Muslim Empire, since the mid-15th century.

I wish to remind people, that this was well before the birth of Adolf Schicklgruber 20th. April 1889 and the Serbo-Croatian born Josip Broz Tito 07th May 1892

Today, Everybody should know, there is no such thing as a clean war!

I’d ask "Bosnia Bob" from the Cheshire Regiment to revue & reflect upon the battle honours awarded to the 22nd Regiment of Foot since 1689.

Also, why the wounds of Bloody Sunday have not healed, 50 years on...

The Catholic priest Edward Daly waving a blood-stained white handkerchief while trying to escort the mortally wounded Jackie Duddy to safety

Also, the colander style address by the Birmingham son of a bus driver lacking actual facts. Edmund Francis Hughes Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Housing and Rough Sleeping, needs a refurbishment, perhaps with real facts.

Just as Donald Rumsfeld, with his Known unknowns he didn’t know all the unknowns.

I don’t know, how selective, or how much effort was employed by each speaker, in choosing the contents of his or her speech, given today in parliament.

Fortunately, Hansard - UK Parliament publishes the official report of all Parliamentary debates.

For those who are new to the Forum & obviously don’t know who or what I am.

Symptoms is aware, that I’m a pit-yacker, the proud son of a post WWII coalminer, born & bred in Bedlington. We attended the same school together, until I made the change to Marton Boarding School in Cheshire.

His father, like my son, even share the same profession.

‘Symptoms’ your most recent post had me literally Gobsmacked, your astute perception of the current situation, caused the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

I Passer domesticus, alias ‘SPUGGY’ with ‘A Different Bias’ a bilingual ‘Little Englander’, standing 6'2 bare footed drawing a German Pension. I relinquished payment of my English pension to the RBL.

Since the ‘Prague Spring’, I have served in BFPO 45 ‘Berlin West’, surrounded by ‘The Wall’.

Also did four and a half years in East Berlin, behind ‘The Wall’.

It was to say the least a very daunting experience during the ‘Cold War’ period.

Berlin West was an enclave behind the ‘Iron Curtain’ in the middle of East Germany,

There was then, & it was simple common knowledge, absolutely no chance of ever getting out!!!

Being able to live & enjoy, to really relish the fact, that it came down, without a single shot being fired, borders on being the unbelievable!!!

At present I am what is called a third country national in Europe, - with still a few years to go on my English passport, - on elapse, I then apply to the ‘BAMF’ - Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge ... Federal Office For Migration & Refugees for Asylum in the European Union State of Germany, that is only if I stay clear of a Covid contamination by the State & don’t croak beforehand.

My children are both German Nationals, they also have the right to be English Citizens.

My current place of abode is only a couple miles away from Stalag X-B / Sandbostel Concentration Camp

Stalag X-B / Sandbostel Concentration Camp - Frank Falla ...

https://www.frankfallaarchive.org › prisons › stalag-xb-sandbostel

Only one Channel Islander is known to have been incarcerated in Stalag X-B / Sandbostel Concentration Camp ( Lager Sandbostel) in the town of Sandbostel in the German state of Lower Saxony, about 27 miles north-east of the city of Bremen. Planning for a labour camp for convicts was begun as early as 1926 and the camp was opened in November 1932.

BBC - WW2 People's War - Liberation Of Sandbostel

the merchant seamen were made to build a camp especially for mercahnt mariners at westertimke - that camp was called milag und marlag nord. after the seamen were removed to milag in October 1942...

BBC - WW2 People's War - SANDBOSTEL

https://www.bbc.co.uk › history › ww2peopleswar › stories › 39 › a4041839.shtml

This place though not as widely known as Auschwitz or Belsen was indeed on a par with these terrible places. I have since researched the Concentration Camp at Sandbostel on one of the Internet...

Also, to all you ‘NIMBY’s’ together with the misinformed, you made an ill conceived decision to leave the EU.

It was much more than making a foolish mistake, it is a disaster!!!

‘’ Perhaps, with what might kick-off in Eastern Europe soon with a Russian/Ukraine/Nato conflict maybe we're in for another bout of mass murder of non-combatants. ‘’

Symptoms, I mean you no malice, your astute perception is good, but it is a misconception, you are well aware that Ukraine is neither a member nor part of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

If. . .

If we're in for another bout of mass murder of non-combatants, we’re going to be right in the middle of it!!!

These days, life is really confusing, a bit like receiving an e-mail invite from Nr.10 to attend party’s without even being told it’s a ‘BYOB party’, but then, nobody told, or asked me!

If anyone reads thus far, my recollection of past comments are still intact!!!

There is so much to explain in order to fill the void I’ve just created, so I’ll finish this post with a ‘Holocaust Memorial Day question:

What was demanded from the Sheriffs of all the counties in England, per royal decree, issued by ‘Edward Longshanks’ on 18th July 1290 that had to be fulfilled no later than ‘All Saints Day’ 01st November that year?

Eggy - Me and Spuggy were best mates throughout our schooldays;  our paths separated when he took 'the Queens Shilling' and I went off to college in London.  Nobody had phones, rented digs short-lived, my parents moved from Bedders in '69 so me and Spuggy lost touch until recently reunited through this Forum.  We chat via email now so review what's going on in the World there.

@Symptoms - when I saw the name 'SPUGGY' in TGH's comment above and your name tag 'Symptoms' was used I thought I heard it before so I did a search and I saw there was a member with the name tag 'Spuggy' that had joined this group back in 2016. I assume 'TGH' & 'Spuggy' are the same person. I also checked the Westridge Gallery Album but couldn't find a match in it. Was TGH/Spuggy involved with the Karting Club?

Holocaust Memorial Day Question - Passer domesticus, alias ‘SPUGGY’

'Raison d’être'

Alan Edgar (Eggy1948) replied to Spuggy’s posting & said:

my raison d'etre = my dad survived WWII and came home to my mam’.

Spuggy’s reply to that is:

@ Alan Edgar (Eggy1948) Bedlington.co.uk:

It has always been my pleasure to please. Thank you for giving my imagination some insight, as to what you achieved at the ‘Ministry’!

No doubt that funding, raised by HMRC, included some of my ‘Hard earned Income Tax’ deducted from ‘The Queens Shilling’, and went towards your keyboard skills, enabling your ability to ferret for data!

Great to know it wasn’t all totally wasted!

Congratulations, for sharing your truism with us, how about a Thursday night ‘Clapp’ to demonstrate our appreciation for you & your dad?

It’s always nice to know I’ve chuffed someone, done something to, whet at least one appetite, please take care with your ingestion habits. It would be a tragedy for a bolus to get stuck in your oesophagus.

Oh! this brings to mind, übrigens, nebenbei, beiläufig

My dad also survived WWII and came home to my mam, his sister’s husband, he too, made it back….he was my only uncle.

OED v4.0 Oxford English Dictionary ᐅ Definition of

‖ raison d'être - (rɛz‹revctilde› dɛtr) [Fr.]

‘Reason of being’; rational ground for existence.

1864 J. S. Mill Let. 18 Mar. (1910) II. 3 Modes of speech which have a real raison d'être.

1867 Morley Burke 208 Plunder in three forms was the very raison d'être of the power of the [East India] Company.

1880 Standard 29 Nov., The Royal Society has almost ceased to have a raison d'être.

1889 A. James Diary 14 Dec. (1964) 67 The French ladies of the 18th century whose whole raison d'être was the graceful, and the light.

1927 C. Connolly Let. 5 May in Romantic Friendship (1975) 301 With Desmond gone I have no raison d'être.

1959 J. Braine Vodi vii. 102 There were a few trees and fields, and even a small colony of expensive privately-built houses, which was rare for a place for which the raison d'être now was Rimelby Main [colliery].

1975 J. G. Evans Environment Early Man Brit. Isles v. 104 A possible raison d'être for these sites was the chert, a desirable raw material.

New addition not yet submitted to OED, and pending approval of acceptance:

‘’my raison d'etre =my dad survived WWII and came home to my mam.’’

Thanks again Alan Edgar (Eggy1948).

Without that I may never have known what a ‘Chert is’.

Chert (/ ˈ tʃ ɜːr t /) is a hard, fine-grained sedimentary rock composed of microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline quartz, the mineral form of silicon dioxide (SiO 2). Chert is characteristically of biological origin, but may also occur inorganically as a chemical precipitate or a diagenetic replacement, as in petrified wood.. Chert is typically composed of the petrified remains of ...

Alan Edgar (Eggy1948) please calm yourself man, take it easy!

Don’t think too much, make use of your ‘Keyboard’ communication skills, to ferret information.

Send him, her or both of them a ‘PM’ requesting enlightenment. Instead of inadvertently disclosing ‘Private Information’ to wrongly satisfy your own personal assumptions and curiosity.

Remember, some of us have achieved seven decades plus on this planet. Do what I try to do here and enjoy your pension in Pegswood.

In order to relieve (Cull) any adverse cranial pressure building up, I know for sure they both attended Westridge School, when ‘Humpf’ was top dog and neither of them, they had ‘Sod all’ no involvement what so ever with Mr. Williams Karting Club.

They both attended, domestic science, metalwork and woodwork.

Mr Stafford gave them their first lessons in German!

Enjoy!!!

My seven decades plus on this planet have been relaxing.

I wasn't ferreting information, just putting my thoughts out into the open discussion.

As I didn't attend Westridge I rely on Symptoms - Ovalteeny - High Pit Wilma and Canny lass to supply me any info I may be looking for.

Hopefully I can now include you to help with any names we are still looking for to add to the Westridge class photos we have posted in the Westridge album in the Gallery section.
