Predicting Crime

A very scary remark, particularly because it's so common.

Quite a few loyal Germans thought they had nothing to hide either. The ones that ignored the warnings of their fellow citizens and convinced themselves that the authorities would act reasonably and fairly. Approximately six million of them!

It's not about what you say or mean, it's about what Maximilien Robespierre says you mean, or about what the party apparatchiks say you meant. They are the custodians of the records, the paymasters of the Gestapo, and the makers and the interpreters of the laws. So you can protest your innocence all the way to the scaffold. When the hard evidence is there (because somehow you upset someone in power, or your removal is expedient) you are screwed!

Last week an old newspaper seller also though he had nowt to hide. Quite clearly he wasn't daring to protest against authority, and simply going about his everyday business. But that wasn't the view of the state thug(s) that downed him. If someone gets charged it will because it's not conceivably possible to cover up the problem, and be a damage limitation exercise. The state always looks after its own, because without unquestioning obedience there is no state.

We can't have the anarchy that these loony-left protesters wish to precipitate, but equally we are heading for state anarchy under the guise of protecting us from things we don't need protecting from. It has happened so many times before, and at the moment it's as if we've learned nothing!

All you ever do is moan, moan, moan about anything and everything. You'd twist on 21 pal.

Please, don't insult the intelligence of anyone by trying to compare modern British politics with those of the sodding Gestapo. Pour yourself a nice herbal tea, grab a slice of lentil bake and get back to your copy of Socialist Worker, because, quite frankly kidda, you're a boring, repetitive !*!@# .

You don't win an argument by insulting people, and on the contrary I do lots of very constructive things. And - gasp - the very last thing I am is a Socialist Worker reader! :)

Most of the people in the police force are well meaning and public spirited. But you have absolutely no grasp of how the system actually works. Where are the Gestapo now, where are the East German and Russian secret police? They were just ordinary well meaning people who got caught up in the madness - just like you are. They are now all in democracy mode and the excesses were someone else's fault. They even thought so at the time but no one would listen.

It's posts like this which illustrate how our country is sleepwalking into Orwellian times. When you ignore the warnings from people who have been in power, know the reality and not the perception, and are worried about where we are heading there really is no hope. If yours becomes the real mass view, then we're sadly doomed to re-live history.

You believe you are superior to these people and that it can't happen here? Curious how the younger people think that this time it will all be different, and the older heads know that they are deluding themselves.

Just because you have nothing to hide doesn't mean you have nothing to fear! It is all about control and by a gov so out of control! I know it is excused by the term 'security' but what exactly are we trying to protect. If our normal way of life is curtailed by these sorts of measures don't the terrorists win by default?

As GGG says it has everything to do with the way remarks are interpreted and the people doing the interpreting!

These measures will rapidly become our "normal way of life", at least as far as the youngsters are concerned. I think the age split in countries like Iran has a fair bit to do with what their leaders manage to sell to their populations.

If the aim of the terrorists is a Muslim state then it could just be that many here would acquiesce to this on the grounds that its a much more ordered and peaceful existence than our secularists are constructing!

I've changed my opinion, I'm starting to see a lot of similarities between the Stasi, the Gestapo, the Khmer Rouge and Gordon's Gang.

You were right all along.

Gordon's gang are the Weirmar Republic. The ones who made such a !*!@# of things that the Nazis had no trouble assuming power. There are some of them who would fall in line with totalitarianism though. The rest - pretty much regardless of party - would be a pushover.

Don't mock, democracy is a far thinner veneer on society than you'd believe. I hope that you don't ever discover this the hard way; but that's the way we are heading at present - just in easy instalments.

And right on cue the police employ a bent pathologist who has been discredited before to produce evidence of a heart attack. The IPCC and the family insist on another pathologist doing a second autopsy which concludes the guy actually died of internal haemorrhaging.

This is a system we are supposed to have confidence in? Thank god for the IPCC, but how long before they are reformed away, have their powers limited in the interests of protecting us from something or other, or are simply compromised by the opaque appointments system.

It's slow, it's steady, and it's insidious; but when an MP simply doing his job is threatened with life imprisonment in the very House of Commons, by a aspiring Gestapo officer who doesn't even have the constitutional right to be there, we are headed for a totalitarian state.

Maybe it a sign of a government too long in power, just as the last Tory one was. Morals and ethics seem to be discarded in an attempt to retain that power or it might just be down to plain old arrogance? Whatever it is we are seeing a carbon copy of the last few years of Major's government. Will any political party dare to assume the mantle of cleaning up political life this time?

All they want to do is cradle their newborn baby in their arms.
But Bedlington parents Carly Walker and Ryan Murphy have been forced to watch from the sidelines as their daughter fights for her life.
Little Ayda Faith Murphy was born prematurely on March 31, weighing just 4lbs, at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Rushed for her first operation straight after birth and another at just four days old, she's battling terrifying odds after being diagnosed with a series of incredibly rare birth defects.
An almost unique variant of gastroschisis, a defect of the abdominal wall, has left her intestines pushing up into her chest - a condition doctors estimate is suffered by no more than 10 babies worldwide.
Meanwhile, her heart appears to have flipped over and lies on the wrong side of her chest, while she's receiving oxygen from a machine due to her underdeveloped lungs.
