Local Dog Found Mutilated

Submitted by Andrew Millne on April 25, 2009 – 12:47 am18 Comments

Bank TopA helpless greyhound needed life saving treatment on Monday after it was discovered bound in electrical tape covered in blood with it’s ears cut off. The dog, a black male greyhound, was found by a member of the public at the Bank Top in Bedlington and taken to a local veterinary centre in Morpeth where he is now making a good recovery.

“Lugless Douglas” as he has been nicknamed by veterinary centre staff is believed to be a former racing greyhound due to the horrific nature of the abuse. Racing dogs are often tattooed in the ears so they can be identified and it is thought that the perpetrators carried out this sickening act in order to remove this method of tracing.

RSPCA representatives have gone on record as saying:

“This is an horrific and sickening act of cruelty.”

“It is clear this dog’s ears have been removed by a sharp implement, which must have caused him unimaginable pain and distress.”

“Thankfully he was rescued early and taken to safety, else he easily could have died.”

“We just hope someone will now come forward with vital information to help us discover what happened.”

The RSPCA also requests that anybody with any information to contact their National Cruelty and Advice Line on 0300 123 4999

I find the nickname ‘Lugless Douglas’ very offensive but quite agree with the association of Dougie with greyhound racing due to the horrific nature of the abuse.
We have seen so many cases of animal and drug abuse – this year alone – within greyhound racing, to justify government intervention to call for abolition or statutory regulation at the very least.

    • john says:

how is the nickname offensive? nut i completely agree with the horrific nature of the attack. i have 2 retired greyhounds, i believe like fox hunting the greyhound racing should be banned to to the miscomfort and unfair living conditions the dogs are put through.

  • Greyhound Crusaders says:

Yet another disturbing case of mutilation, Dougie is lucky to be alive. We wish him well. This so called sport of greyhound racing should be banned outright. Please visit http://www.greyhoundaction.org.uk
We have recently reported to our suporters in the last few weeks a greyhound found stabbed to death with a breadknife in Sunderland, an ex-racing greyhound who was dumped in Sittingbourne and then involved in a road traffic accident, a greyhound found drowned in a potato sack in the River Foyle in Ireland, a heartbreaking case of a greyhound who was pregnant with six pups, brutally killed with ears hacked off and dumped on wasteland in Iron Acton nr. Bristol, also a very disturbing case in Hartlepool of a greyhound found decomposed with ears hacked off, an emaciated greyhound found in Gloucestershire and a recent prosecution for a man who kept his racing greyhounds in concentration camp type conditions.
We live in hope that this needless cruelty to sentient beings will end in the very near future. We hope that the person or persons that committed this heinous crime is found and locked up, justice must prevail.

  • Gaby Lydiate says:

Has anyone checked the greyhound DNA database in order to trace the owner of Dougie? Someone must be held accountable – the owner, the Greyhound Board of Great Britain, and, if the police and RSPCA pull their fingers out, the b******d who did it!

  • Val Wolf says:

Lately a week has not gone by without yet another racing greyhound being found mutilated and or killed. This is nothing new. Racing greyhounds have been abused, tortured and killed for decades. These latest discoveries are merely the tip of the iceberg as to the fate of these magnificent creatures. May greyhound racing be abolished.

  • Janet Jewell says:

Yet another example of how disgusting human behaviour can become. I am totally appalled at what seems to be a trend of cruelty to greyhounds as well as other breeds of dog. We hear the headlines but we don’t often hear of anyone being caught and prosecuted. I would be interested in the statistics as to how many perpetrators of animal cruelty actually do go through the justice system.

  • Deana Hart says:

The sooner Greyhound racing is finally halted forever the better it will be. The owners of racing dogs seem a cruel heartless mob of greedy monsters, and to do such terrible things like cutting off their ears or killing them is cruelty beyond all belief. i really hope the culprits get punished for such wicked acts.

  • Neil says:

Thats sick. Find out who did it and do the same to them! What goes around comes around….

  • Jackie Daltrey says:

This case needs to be dealt with as a priority. The frequency of this type of cruelty is astounding, thankfully Dougie is one of the rare survivors, but more cases will sadly occur, until all racing is abolished. In a so called civilised society that time is way overdue.

  • Ian Douglas says:

What is wrong with these people? Can you imagine anyone doing such a thing? Unfortunately this is nothing new – greyhounds have been mutilated and killed for decaded due to the “sport” of greyhound racing. Like foxhunting it’s about time it was banned!

    • roy allen says:

While you have leading M.P.s such as Cameron pledging to bring back hunting and celebrities such as Jeremy Clarkson a keen hare courser, we are fighting a losing battle against cruelty ,bring in harsher penalties and give more publicity to these evil people who support and encourage cruelty.

  • Jean Greyhounds r 4 Me! says:

Someone somewhere knows who these people are and they are just as much to blame as the perpetrators! Whilst I agree with Neil that it would be great if they could suffer the same fate we cannot do this! However we can all bombard the Press locally and Nationally, our local MPs, the Police with letters and emails asking that greyhound racing should be made illegal. If you live near a track please go out and educate the punters as to what happens to these beautiful, intelligent and faithful dogs (I have had three) You can read all the horrendous things which have happened in the Greyhound Crusaders comments above! Look up some of the greyhound websites and read more horror stories I do not know why it should be that these lovely dogs have to suffer so much – all they need is a home with loving owners Please campaign as much as you can!!

  • Jean Greyhounds r 4 Me! says:

Forgot to add in my previous comment Like Trudy I too find the name “Lugless Douglas” very offensive and certainly not in the right context for an article featuring a horrendous story like this one!!!

  • roy allen says:

These people are just evil and the owners of this poor dog must be known to the local greyhound racing fraternity. Unless they come forward with information they are equaly as bad as the ones that carried out these awful acts .Severe sentences must be imposed when they are caught and this nonsense of courts giving fines and punishment of not being allowed to keep a dog for two years or whatever ,there should be gaol and a life ban on keeping animals.

  • Hilke van Hove says:

I think once the general public realizes that the cost of rescuing animals is at the expense ot the taxpayer, involving all sorts to help that animal.

Maybe then the general public will wake up, it is costing them money. They are paying for it.

What a sorry state humanity is in, when one starts a message about animal cruelty with the costs involved instead of how sad I am that animal cruelty is still my major worry and priority nr. 1.

I’ve written this to start with, because If I would have started with how disgusted I am with this cruelty, nobody would have read it.
I am disgusted, more than that, making money out of that dog and then treat it so cruelly that I wouldn’t want this person to be related to me, because I would report him to the police, whether it is my father, brother or friend.

All the volunteers and the donating public are despised, because they are named ’softies’.

I am not ashamed of being a softy, proud of it.

    Moderator,
why has my comment been removed?
I have not said anything rude.
Is it because I am dutch?
I’ve shared this with facebook, and we are animal advocates going through great lengths to defend these animals by signing petitions.
When police and vets are involved, this is costing the community a lot of money. A lot of time of volunteers, such as me.
And yet you remove my mail. is this England, where I lived and payed tax money????, or is this China???
